The last place on earth I’d really want to be is standing is at the very edge of a volcano spewing molten lava. Something I’d love to witness is a volcano erupting. Inconsistent? Totally! Having camped and hiked in the Cascade Mountains the beauty of Mts. St. Helens, Rainier, Adams, Hood, and Baker is hardwired into my fluid thoughts and feelings. These hardened mountains appearing as if enduring forever were all once dynamic molten lava gushing and flowing as rivers.
Something else that appears to be hard and set but is actually a liquid is glass. The various ingredients fused together with heat flow as liquid freely like a river. Then with cooling the fused liquid becomes set in certain beautiful patterns. Ironically glass remains in its cooled state as a liquid. To us glass seems set and fused in our minds as being steady and unchanging. Even glass flows.
What flows like a river is life itself. We become transfixed with certain ways of looking at life. We use these ways, habits, and inclinations as tools to judge others and ourselves and to make and hold assumptions about what life, community, and God are all about.
To be quickened is to come alive, be revived and restored to life. Life flows. We are coming out of Covid-19 induced lockdowns of many kinds. Regathered again we will be moving with each other hopefully and prayerfully with patience and gratitude for one another’s life experiences and needs. So many people have so many strong feelings, set opinions, and fixed ways of viewing how others should be acting. We all need to stow such baggage. May we flow lovingly, graciously, and appreciatively with each other in joy!
2nd John Chapter One wrote: “I hope to come to you and talk face to face, so that our joy may be complete.” Joy in each other’s presence in person! In each other’s presence we will be made more complete and whole in joy”!
Peace people of God.
