In the time of Jesus of Nazareth the ones attending to all the functions of the physical temple space, its customs, ways, observations, rituals, and swirl of events repeated every year could not figuratively see beyond the walls. Jews were familiar with the temple as the home of God, the place to become: purified and re-affirm ones roots, heritage, and identity individually, culturally, and as a nation of people called by God even in times of occupation by a foreign power (strangers in the midst with life impulses — different, foreign, perplexing, and held to be dangerous).
In our times we can be siloed down within various cultural bunkers with the “other” out there driving us bonkers. Sound familiar? Others occupying spaces we take to be our own stirring discord and not stemming concord and unity? Discord swelling up caused by “others” not complying to my standard and ways. There is another WAY.
One who was very familiar with all the rites and ways of the temple space was named Jesus. He left the temple, went out there into the hinterlands and found the living temple in the hearts and souls of every person around him in the here and now. In the hearts, souls, and life experiences of every person there is this centering presence of the divine — the sole and soul’s wellspring of living waters. This — Christ’s revealing and still stunning way, teaching, presence. Gospel of John Chapter 15:5: I am the vine, you are the branches. Go the root. There is the main vine stemming life’s concord and unity.
