This past Monday was our newest Federal holiday, Juneteenth.  It is a commemoration of General Order No. 3 where enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned they were freed.  Recently I purchased a small volume by historian Annette Gordon-Reed.  She is an African-American born in Texas and whose family ties go deep into Texan history. … Read More »

This coming Sunday is Father’s Day, a day to say thank you to those who have been or who have served as father figures in our lives.  I was fortunate to know both my father and one of my grandfathers.  Those men made an impression on my life, shaping me to what I am… Read More »

Taking a Break

June 7, 2023 By Webmaster (MH) Leave a Comment

Over the years I have learned the wisdom of “taking a break”, taking a day off and going somewhere I haven’t been in a long time or have never seen.  The object isn’t to meet up with someone, or go shopping, or sit in an audience of some kind.  The object is have a… Read More »

May 31, 2023 By Webmaster (MH) Leave a Comment

This past Sunday the color red was visibly present in our sanctuary as we celebrated with joy the birthing story of the church, Pentecost Sunday.  We also took the time to remember those who gave their lives in service of their country because it was also Memorial Day weekend.             This coming week is… Read More »

Memorial Day Weekend

May 24, 2023 By Webmaster (MH) Leave a Comment

Memorial Day Weekend is later this week.  It is the “unofficial time of summer”, the weekend when white shoes and white clothes are “authorized”, the weekend of crowded roads leading to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and beyond to the ocean, the time to get the grill out, the weekend for the Indianapolis 500.            … Read More »

Thin Places

May 17, 2023 By Webmaster (MH) Leave a Comment

“Tis the season of pomp and circumstance.”  Currently and for the next several weeks graduation activities will fill the calendars.  In two weeks, our youngest grandson, five years old, will be graduating from Preschool.  His next adventure will be Kindergarten which meets at the “regular” elementary school.  A significant passage.  Our granddaughter graduates from elementary… Read More »

May 3, 2023 By Webmaster (MH) Leave a Comment

My heart is full.  I had the privilege to spend the weekend with a group of women from Greenbelt Community Church in a Women’s Retreat at the Bishop Claggett Retreat Center in Buckeystown, Maryland.  We laughed, we cried, we told stories, we listened to one another, we took time for ourselves, we spent time… Read More »
