A meme was posted on Facebook featuring Peppermint Patty and Snoopy. Peppermint Patty asks: “What can you do when everything seems hopeless?” Snoopy’s response is: “Eat a cookie?”
There are cookies and coffee, tea and cold beverages downstairs in the Social Hall following every Sunday morning service.
We are experiencing a time when there is great anxiety, sadness, and for some, fear. Things can feel very hopeless very quickly because decisions are being made at a breakneck speed and without regard for human consequences.
What do you do when everything seems hopeless? Good question. Some are choosing “hibernation”, staying away from everyone and all news coverage. Some are choosing “self-medication” with those old favorites: alcohol, gambling, drugs. Some are intensifying their anxiety level by over-indulging is news reports and reactions but without any clear plan of action. What do you do when everything seems hopeless?
This is a time when the church has something to offer. We can tell the stories of those who have persevered. We have the witness of sacred text to remind us of God’s faithfulness to those God loves (all of us). We hear that the Spirit will pray for us and our concerns even when we have lost the ability to form the words and thoughts. We have community – a sacred gathering of people who have known God’s presence and strength in their lives and who by their very presence creates a safe place for us to bring our most vulnerable selves. And we have cookies!
What do you do when everything seems hopeless? Cast your burden upon the Lord. Psalm 55:22. Come, be part of a community who knows from generations that God can be trusted with our worries and our fears. Enjoy the cookies as you enjoy the company of one another, travelers along the path of life accompanied by the Risen Christ.
