Have you thought about friendships lately? Some of you have a cadre of friends that live near you and with whom you interact regularly. Others have friends spread across the United States and globe. Some friendships have lasted a lifetime, others are new acquaintances.
Nina Totenberg wrote of her friendship with Ruth Bader Ginzburg. This fall, this book will be the choice for our Fall Book Study. In her introduction, Nina Totenberg writes: Ruth didn’t teach me everything about friendship. I’ve had other wonderful teachers, expected and unexpected. All of them have taught me that friendship is precious, that it involves showing up, that it involves supporting and helping, that is not always about the grand gesture, but rather about the small one. It is about extending the invitation, making space at the table, picking up the phone, and also remembering. Friendship is what cushions life’s hoped-for blessings. It can sometimes be as simple as a hug when a hug matters most.
During the Book Study we will have the time to reflect on this quote and others, as well as talk about the many stories shared within the covers of this very readable book, Dinners With Ruth, A Memoir on the Power of Friendships.
You are invited to join Greenbelt Community Church UCC for a fall book study on Wednesday mornings for five weeks. The book selection is Dinners With Ruth, A Memoir on the Power of Friendship by Nina Totenberg (Simon & Schuster, New York, 2022). We will meet by Zoom at 10:00 AM). Selected quotes will be our starting point, and will determine the number of chapters for each week.
