What does it mean to be a resurrection people? That’s what we in the church are called to be. That’s how we tell the Good News of Easter all year long. But what does it mean to you?
I think it means we have a different way to look at the situations in our lives. Instead of being overwhelmed by how bad things feel or are, as a resurrection person we know that evil and death are not going to have the last word. The logical inference is that there is something we can do to change the trajectory of events around us. As a resurrection person, we see God willing justice and hope for God’s people.
I think it means a sense of joy. There is an old song/rhyme that includes “I’ve got joy, joy, joy down in my heart today”; “I’ve got the love of Jesus, love of Jesus down in my heart, down in my heart today”. This is the witness of resurrection people today and every day. And if we have palpable joy in our hearts, that joy will show through in our lives.
I think it means a profound comfort in those times of our lives when we face our mortality. The Christ’s resurrection has opened a new door to our existence. There are more than our years on earth. There is a going home to God that is wrapped in love. We don’t know all the particulars, but Jesus led the way, and it will be good.
I think being a resurrection person is to be a servant to others. It is to take Jesus’ words seriously when he told his disciples that he had just set the example for them to be servants in the world. And then he said, “love one another”. Being a servant people is foreign to our way of thinking. We are more inclined to think about being in charge and fixing things. Jesus tells us to be servant people, cleaning up the messes of people’s lives, really seeing one another as we serve one another, thinking of the other rather than our comfort. Being a resurrection person is work. But that’s OK. Jesus is there with us, wash bowl and towel at the ready. We are not alone. That’s also resurrection news.
